19 Moss St, Prescot

Private 27615, 3rd Bn., Manchester Regiment

Alfred was a 27 year old Labourer when he joined the army on 21st July 1915 at Birkenhead. He recorded that his wife was Rhoda (nee Coupworth) and that they had married in St Helens on 8th August 1914.

Although the date of posting is not kn own, he went to Mesopotamia with his unit some time after December 1915. But his records show that he was discharged on 10th April 1917. He was classed as being no longer physically fit, as he was suffering from Malaria.

After discharge, Alfred wrote to the Records Office asking if he was entitled to wear a badge to indicate that he had served in the army. On 5th June, he was issued with a Silver War Badge in recognition of his service.





Alfred was also entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
