Edmund attested for Military Service on 7th November 1914 at St Helens, aged 19. He was appointed Lance Corporal (an unpaid rank)( on 30th October 1915, then promoted to full Corporal on 7th August 1917, though he reverted to Lance Corporal (his own choice) on 27th December that year. On 17th February 1917, he sailed for France, where he remained until returning to the UK on 5th March 1918.
He appeared before a medical panel at hospital in Maghull on 7th November 1918 and was discharged on 12th November as being no longer physically fit for military service. He was suffering from Neurasthenia, caused by his military service.
On 28th July 1920, Edmund wrote to the Army Records Office, giving his address as 1, Victoria Place, Prescot, asking (for the third time) if he was entitled to the “King’s Certificate”.

Edmund was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, receiving these medals in 1921. He also received the Silver War Badge.
