Address Not Known Private 1882, 5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment James number shows that he enlisted to the 5th Battalion as a Territorial soldier in July/August of 1913.
James was listed in the Reporter, hsoing him in the Bible Class List, the main list of Prescot men serving, and also i the list of Roman Catholic men serving.
In the Territorial Force renumbering in early 1917, he was given the number 240291. Sometime after this, he transferred to the 23rd Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment, where he was numbered 316255.
His medal card further shows him to be serving with the Territorial Royal Signals as Corporal, then later as Serjeant, 2557128. This 7 digit number is a post war number, showing his continued service.
He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, and also later he was awarded the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal.
The London Gazette reported, in 1919, his award of the French Medal Militaire avec Croix Du Guerre (see below).
